Food that isn’t meat, pasta, pizza or empanadas – completely worth the wait

SATURDAY 04/17/10

Flor and I were going to go to a film for the BAFICI at 11:00 pm, but we were in the neighborhood with a very popular Armenian restaurant that we had wanted to try.  So, at 9:00 pm, we went to find a crowd of people outside waiting for tables.

The wait was going to be 45 minutes to an hour, so we did a coin toss to decide whether we would go to the movie or stay for dinner…the coin landed in favor of Sarkis.  We went for a drink at a nearby bar and came back after 45 minutes to realize that the wait times were in Argentine-time.  We ended up not sitting down until 11:00 pm, but our wait was soon proven to be worth it.  The server had worked at the restaurant for 27 years, and as soon as we sat down, he asked if we knew what we wanted.  Needing some clarification on the menu, he helped us in choosing 3 half-portion appetizers: shredded beets, baba ghanoush and a salad with zapallitos (like a green squash), eggplant, peppers, onions and almonds, as well as 2 meat dishes.  While we decided on the wine, he said he’d be right back with the appetizers…and within a minute he returned with the tasty appetizers.  It was such a wonderful break from the standard Argentine food and poor service.
