The Disneyland of Tango

WEDNESDAY 01/12/11

As a must-do in Buenos Aires, I went with Hillary and Jason to El Caminito in Boca on their last day.  I had only been once when I visited Buenos Aires in 2008.  It was just the same, if not more inundated by tourists and entertainers and waiters trying to sell their version of tango.  This is where the city was founded and where tango originated. In all reality, it is a very poor area of town with the buildings made of wood and tin and painted in different colors (originally because there wasn’t enough paint of one color to cover an entire building).  El Caminito is the 4 block area that is crowded with street cafes, tango dancers and tourist shops.

Sábado a FULL

SATURDAY 01/08/11

It was time to show Hillary and Jason some of Buenos Aires.  We spent the afternoon riding the Tren de las Costa.  It’s a tourist train that was reminiscent of London’s train stations and even the houses lining the tracks had a European feel.  You can get off and on at any of its 11 stops that follow the coastline of the Río de la Plata.

recycling - something VERY rare in Argentina (but there may be some confusion, as they're labeled incorrectly)

We ended our journey at Tigre and hopped a guided boat tour to see part of the delta.

After all of the fresh air, we were ready for some beef at La Cabrera.

We ended the day at the PeñaLa Ribera, a peña in the open air right along the river.

JUJUY: La Garganta del Diablo

TUESDAY 01/04/11

I decided to get a bit more nature in, so Mariana, Andres and I hiked to the Garganta del Diablo and a small cascade.  It felt wonderful to be in the fresh air one last time!

returning to the pueblo

I made my way back to the hostel, led by a fellow companion.

I showered, packed up, ate a wonderful lunch of quinoa salad and took the bus to Salta.

The Dakar Rally was heading from Tucumán to Jujuy the same day that I was traveling and we were forced to take the back way to Salta.  It took about two hours longer – partially due to the route and partially due to all of the spectators who had come out to watch and lined the road from San Salvador de Jujuy to Salta.

One more night in Salta then it was the 20 hour bus ride home.
