My friend, Lluis Torrents, gave a presentation at the Casal de Catalunya comparing the environments of Buenos Aires and Barcelona.
It’s apparent how polluted Buenos Aires is just by going for a walk – especially in the summer: you can go out for an hour without touching a thing and by the time you return home, your face is caked in dust and dirt – if you scratch anything, your fingernails immediately become black. The buses still run on inefficient diesel fuel, the cars are much older on average, biking is JUST becoming accessible and popular, and taxis are more frequent than on Madison Avenue. Here are some statistics from Lluis’s research:
Urban Area
203 km2
3 million people
15.005 people/km2
Suburban Area
4.758 km2
13.4 million people
2.807 people/km2
- 36% of the population has private vehicles (compared to 15% in Barcelona)
- Buenos Aires has 9,500 buses on the streets. Barcelona has 1,080.
- 39% of the emissions in Buenos Aires are from transportation.
