Facultad de Filosofia y Letras

John brought me to his former Facultad de Filosofía y Letras (Philosophy and Liberal Arts Department) of the University of Buenos Aires located in Caballito.  It’s unlike anything I’ve seen before.  This is the epicenter of liberalism, socialism, radicalism…all left-wing isms.  There are posters plastering every square inch of the interior of the building – from denouncements of activists being held in prison to announcements for upcoming reggaetón concerts to calls for rallies around the city to protest various actions.  There was a rather scraggly man lounging on the stairs leading from the first floor to the second floor asking for money, the library has yet to join the Dewey Decimal System with its card catalog still in filing cabinets, and people were selling their own baked goods and empanadas throughout the building.  I could be immediately transposed to the ‘70s and ‘80s when this was one of the hotbeds for dissidents of the dictatorship with 423 desaparecidos (disappeared) during the period.
