Eva Schloss & Cena Norteña

Meri and I went to the Anne Frank House here in Buenos Aires to hear her step-sister, Eva Schloss speak about their experience during the Holocaust and the spreading of Anne Franks’s story.  It was so moving to hear this 81-year-old woman who had lived through similar traumas.  She and Anne lived in the same neighborhood in Amsterdam and went into hiding around the same time.  After being in concentration camps, she and her mother were the only survivors of their family, while Anne Frank’s father was the only survivor of his.  Eva’s mother and Anne’s father married a few years after the war and then Eva and Otto Frank set on a mission to disseminate Anne’s story.

Afterward, we headed to a “puertas cerradas” (closed doors) dinner that a friend of Flor was cooking.  The concept of setting up a private restaurant in a home with a multiple course meal is very common down here.  Flor’s friend and some of her friends came up with the idea of doing themed dinners, and this night was a Cena Norteña featuring cuisine from the northern region of Argentina that borders Bolivia.

There was also a storyteller who told some great tales – one with the lesson not to spread bad news, because worse events could come from the perception of what may happen.
