WEDNESDAY 03/31/10
I’m starting to hit the point where living in Buenos Aires is just becoming everyday life…observing everything around me and reflecting on daily events is becoming a little tedious and repetitive. The sights, sounds, smells are all just part of my routine. But here are my observations of those things up to this point:
SCENTS OF BUENOS AIRES
- fresh dog poo
- pastelerias
- insence in the street kiosks
- flowers from flower stands
- cleaning products
- dirt/dust from construction
- perfumes – like spring, not the flowery old lady stuff of Spain
- cologne – reminds me of the salsa clubs
SOUNDS
- construction
- children playing in the street
- loud diesel buses
- bus whistles
- men making kissing noises, as if they were calling a dog or cat, as I walk by…even if I’m on the completely opposite side of the street
- sirens
- futbol being kicked against the side of the wall
- wind blowing in the trees (most streets are tree-lined and there are some huge, old trees that have even been built around)
- ice cream man yelling “eh-la-o” (for “helado”)
- pan flute of the knife sharpener
- megaphone of a salesman that comes around
- zipping of mopeds
- children laughing and screaming on the other side of a brick wall as you pass a school
- dogs barking
DE MODA (FASHION) OF BUENOS AIRES
- “i shit my pants” pants – in varying lengths and sizes “pantalones turcos” “harem pants”
- hermes sandals
- men’s hairstyles – the mohawk, the mullet, the ponytail, the odd ways of shaving…and some of them combined
- camel toe shoes (that even come with camel toe socks!)
- claw clips with large flowers place randomly in hair
- banana clips
- skirts from India
- peasant tops
