Throughout the afternoon and early evening, there was a parade of Candombes in San Telmo. The Candombe started in Africa and spread to Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina during the slave era of the 1800s. As most Africans were expelled or killed from Argentina at the turn of the 20th century, it has only recently gained recognition and popularity again. The music and dance of the Candombe is actually believed to be the origins of the tango in Argentina.
