JUJUY: Purmamarca y las Salinas Grandes

SUNDAY 01/02/11

Meri and Javi had shown up at the hostel the previous night after returning from Bolivia, so we headed to Purmamarca.  We intended on going straight to the Salinas Grandes (Salt Flats), until we realized about 15 km into the mountain pass that we didn’t have enough NAFTA (gas) to get us there and back.  After returning the 20 km to Tilcara to fill up, we were informed that the gas station was out of gas – a Sunday of a holiday weekend, 2 days before the huge international Dakar car rally…of course there wouldn’t be gas!  (Oh! Argentina!)  The truck was supposed to be coming between 4pm and 5pm to replenish the supplies.  (We feared that this meant 6pm or 7pm.)  We changed plans and ate lunch in Purmarmarca.

After confirming that the gas truck had actually arrived at 4pm, Javi went back to fill up.  We were on the road 6 hours later than expected, but it was very much worth it!

back on the road!

Meri and Javi headed back down to Salta and I was on my own again in Tilcara.  Andres, Nahuel and Marcia had continued on their way to Bolivia, so it was time to make new friends in the hostel.  Claudio (Buenos Aires), Luciana (Rosario) and Jorge (Rosario) and I went to see the same singers as the night before in a different restaurant, El Nuevo Progreso.  The atmosphere was significantly different – it was a nice cena-show (dinner show) and much more family-oriented, but we completely enjoyed ourselves!
